How to tell if clam is alive!?

I bought some live rock and was arranging it in my tank and I saw a little clam a little smaller than a dime. he isn't shut but it looks healthy on the inside (hes pinkish) im not sure what to do with it. when I touch him he doesn't close but when I picked him up he was closed.
