Child Support? The state wants to get involved but I have reservations?

My husband and I separated and he's paying me monthly for the support of our children. Because I still need government assistance, the state wants me to file with the DA against my ex. I had told my my ex I would try to keep it from going there and I'm afraid that filing against him will make things worse. I know of so many instances where filing with the state does so little and I don't even know if I would get the full amount of what they take from him. I just don't know if it's going to be in mine and my childrens' benefit for me to file against him and since I'm having a hard enough time making it now, I really don't want to make things worse. Does anyone know how things work for TX?
