Can i use butter as a substitute for shortening in a recipe that requires butter and shortening as well?

I want to try out a recipe for an Italian cream layered cake, and it requires the use of both butter and shortening. I usually use butter as my substitute since i never use shortening. Is it okay if i just use butter or should i use something else, like vegetable oil, for instance?
